Data transferred to and from the Red Rook servers is due to many reasons. The most common activities to generate traffic are; visiting (downloading) a web page, sending or receiving emails, uploading a website (using FTP).
Red Rook does not charge for data transfer from any of our Australian based servers. We do not set limits on the amount of data that can be downloaded from your website. Red Rook was the FIRST hosting company in Australia to offer FREE TRAFFIC to customers!
There are many “Australian based” web hosting businesses that actually have their web servers in the USA. Red Rook’s web servers are all based in a major Australian, Sydney data centre. A major disadvantage of being hosted in the USA is the time to download web pages on servers in the USA can take upto 5 times longer than from an Australian server, due to the distances involved.
Red Rook, unlike a lot of the cheaper or even many of the “Big” web hosting companies, does not advertise “unlimited traffic”. To us, “unlimited traffic” is deceptive and misleading, as there is always the “fine print”! Nothing is ever unlimited. Try doing 100GB download per day (or whatever is against their AUP) from any web host offering “unlimited traffic” and we are 100% confident your site will be suspended by them. To use an analogy, there is also only so much water that can go through a pipe at any one point in time.
Red Rook will NEVER charge you, even for what may appear to be excessive traffic. The traffic is FREE, not unlimited. What we will do though is stop a website adversely affecting ANY other customer one of our Australian shared hosting servers. This is what 100% of our customers want, even those with huge resource requirements!
Red Rook monitors the resource usage of all web sites. If a website is using a huge amount of system resources, then chances are you are also doing a lot of traffic. If you fall into that category (and 99.9% of customers do NOT), we will work with you to find a solution that suits your requirements, keeping in mind that a shared hosting account uses shared system resources on a web server with other customers.
