Acceptance Testing for Web Site Development

Acceptance Testing is the process of evaluating a new or revised undertaken by both owners/managers and end-users of the system to make sure it meets their business needs.

This applies to web site design and development, as much as it does to any manual or automated system.

With Acceptance Testing, the main objective to aim for is happy end-users and stakeholders. Whilst it does take time and resources to do Acceptance Testing, the rewards far outweigh the effort needed to undertake this activity. Acceptance Testing ensures that the new or improved web site you want is the web site you get, at the price you were prepared to pay.

Acceptance Testing helps keep a project budget under control by clearly stating and measuring the delivered product and outputs against the business requirements. The web site designer and developer also knows exactly what is required of them under the contract arrangements for the delivery of the product.

The implications of overlooking or understating the importance of Acceptance Testing are considerable. Those accountable for the Project may find the system costing more than what was initially budgeted for because the ‘errors’ were not properly identified and resolved before putting the product into production. Therefore the effects of lost productivity from a product that does not meet quality standards or functionality could have major long-term effects on your business.

However, Acceptance Testing must be resourced effectively and appropriate time must be allocated to thoroughly test the product.

In the near future, we'll be uploading a series of articles that can help you achieve the above. It articles are designed as a guide to alert and inform anyone involved with a Project, and the Acceptance Testing task, of the benefits, issues, and pitfalls that can come hand-in-hand with the Acceptance Testing process. Every project is unique and as such, this Kit will enable this unique nature to be successfully managed and accounted for. Above all, talk with others about the Acceptance Testing process and benefit from their knowledge and experience they may bring to the activity. In particular, discuss the process with stakeholders and end-users!
